August 29, 2009 - Laredo, TX - The Coastal Bend Thunder defeated the Laredo Bronco's 13 - 2 in the first game and 7 - 1 in the second game to stay a half game ahead of Rio Grande Valley, who beat San Angelo tonight, for the forth and final playoff spot with two games remaining. The Thunders win streak is now at seven while the Broncos' losing streak reached eight games.
The Laredo Broncos could not overcome an early 10 run deficit, as they lost the completion of the suspended game to the Coastal Bend Thunder by a score of 13-2 at Veterans Field, on Friday.
The Thunder grabbed the early lead in the first inning. With one out Leivi Ventrua knocked in Amadeo Zazueta with a single. Later in the inning Alex Fernandez hit a three run home run, his first of the season. The Thunder then loaded the bases still with only one out, on a single and two walks. Michael Lewis came up and was hit by a pitch, which scored Carlos Rodriguez. That was followed by a walk to Dustin Smith that scored Bryan Vickers. That was it for Broncos' starter Luis Arroyo, as he was taken out of the game. Carlos Alvarez came in for Laredo to try to end the inning. After the second out of the inning, Leivi Ventura hit a two run single that scored Kevin Buter and Lewis. That gave Coastal Bend the early 8-0 lead.
Arroyo only lasted one third of an inning for the Broncos. He gave up eight runs, on five hits; he walked three, and struck out none. Before the bottom of the first could get underway, a big storm hit Laredo. That caused the game to be suspended and the game was restarted from that point.
The Thunder added on to their lead in the fifth off of Alvarez. Amadeo Zazueta hit an rbi single that scored Michael Lewis. That was followed by another rbi single, this time from Manny Mejia. That made the score 10-0.
Carlos Alvarez was done for the Broncos after five and two third innings of relief work. He gave up two runs, on seven hits; he walked three and struck out two. Luany Sanchez then came in to pitch for Laredo in the seventh.
The Broncos finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh. Mario Mendez hit a solo home run, his eighth of the season. Two batters later Robert Moron hit a solo home run, his second of the season. That made the score 10-2.
The Thunder got some more runs in the ninth. With the bases loaded and one out Dustin Smith hit an rbi single, that scored Bryan Vickers. Amadeo Zazueta followed by reaching on an error by Mario Mendez which scored Kevin Butler. Leivi Ventura then reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed Michael Lewis to score. The score was now 13-2 .
The Thunder's starter Frank James came out for the ninth, looking for the complete game. The Broncos did not do any damage in the inning, as Laredo lost the completion of the suspended game 13-2.
The Broncos scored 2 runs on 7 hits and had 2 errors while the Thunder scored 13 runs on 15 hits and had 0 errors.
The Broncos are now 22-55 on the season while the Thunder are 37-39. The Broncos will next be in action Saturday August 29th, as they play game two of the doubleheader against the Coastal Bend Thunder at Veterans Field. In game two the Broncos grabbed the early lead in the first inning. Mario Mendez hit a solo home run, his ninth of the season. That gave Laredo the 1-0 lead. The Thunder answered back in the second inning. Carlos Rodriguez hit an rbi double that scored Alex Fernandez. Later in the inning, Rodriguez was able to score on a passed ball by Jonathan Carrillo. Michael Lewis then knocked in Bryan Vickers with a single. That now gave Coastal Bend a 3-1 lead.
The Thunder added on to their lead in the third. Alex Fernandez hit a two run double that scored both Leivi Ventura and Manny Mejia. That chased Broncos' starter Edgar Soto from the game, as Julio Pinto came in. He finished off the inning, with the Thunder now leading 5-1.
Soto lasted two plus innings. He gave up five runs, four of which were earned, on five hits. He walked three, struck out one, and threw four wild pitches.
The Thunder exteded their lead in the fourth inning. Leivi Ventura hit an rbi triple that scored Dustin Smith. Manny Mejia then doubled in Smith to make the score was now 7-1.
Fernando Rijo and Franklyn Gracesqui combined for three scoreless innings, as the Broncos trailed by six heading to the bottom of the seventh.
The starter for the Thunder, Toro Trevino, came out for the seventh looking for the complete game. Laredo did nothing in the inning, as they lost the second game of the doublheader 7-1.
The Broncos scored 1 run on 3 hits and had 1 error while the Thunder scored 7 runs on 11 hits and had 0 errors.
The Broncos are now 22-56 on the season while the Thunder are 38-39. The Broncos will next be in action Sunday August 30th, as they play game three of a four game series against the Coastal Bend Thunder at Veterans Field.
